Former Kenya Rugby Sevens player Allan Makaka is dead.
The player who made 57 appearances on the Sevens World Series for Shujaa's died in a road accident on Mombasa Road on Friday, May 22.
In a statement by Royal Media Services (RMS) where Makaka worked as Hot 96 Business Manager before his passing, the 37-year-old’s death was a blow.
“Allan has been instrumental in mentoring members of his team who have gone on to excel in their work. His friendship extended throughout the whole organization. He embraced all and interacted freely with everyone.
“We have been in touch with the family to condole with them. We request your prayers and support to the family during this very difficult time,” stated Rose Wanjohi, RMS Human Resource Director.
A message shared by many including former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale who mourned his nephew as a star gone too soon.
“My nephew, Allan Makaka of Royal Media, crashed to death last night. At the mortuary condoling with his father Mzee Makaka, sister Maureen, friends & colleagues. His family, the Bamahalia of Mukhonje village Shinyalu and Judith Munzala, are all my thoughts and prayers. RIP dear son,” posted Khalwale on Twitter.
For Kenya Harlequins, a club he featured for prominently, Makaka died a Quin warrior.
“Rest in power brother, warrior, and champion. Our prayers are with your family and loved ones. On this sad day, we grieve with you. Your loss is hard for us to fathom at the moment. Once a Quin, always a Quin. Nunquam Dormio.”
Colleague Fred Obachi Machoka of the Roga Roga fame who eulogized the deceased as a genius.
“When we all thought it's Covid19 we have to worry about, then you get to hear that a young vibrant gentleman has just lost his life as a result of a tragic road accident! RIP #AllanMakaka a "marketing" genius,” wrote Machoka.
So did 10 over 10 host and Hot 96 presenter Willis Raburu who on his part stated, “RIP Allan Makaka you guy, you guy, my guy. Sigh. Always the life of the office! Rest well bro.”
While Citizen TV sports personality Bernard Ndong mourned the deceased as a man who told it as it is.
“I remember this day interviewing you at the 2018 Rugby sevens World cup in #SanFrancisco #USA reflecting on the Kenya Sevens team's performance. You never minced your words, you always spoke your mind.”
