Some local celebrities have fully accepted their partners’ children from previous relationships. One such celeb is YouTuber Rama Ramzzy, popularly known for his family vlog The Green Calabash.
What was your reaction when you realised that Shiko had a child?
I knew Shiko had a child. I’m very open-minded. I wasn’t going to let that be the determining factor of whether or not we could have something going.
How was your relationship with the child in the beginning?
My relationship with Ella, who was three, was as mummy’s friend. I had to balance being a friend to Ella as well as being an adult.
How hard was it accepting another man’s child?
Unless you are very strict with your culture and it doesn’t allow you to love children - accepting another man’s child isn’t as difficult as people make it out to be. Children are a blessing.
How is the relationship with the child now?
It is great. She went from calling me Uncle Rama to daddy. I’ve earned that title.
How is your relationship with the child’s biological father?
We have a very respectful relation-ship with each other. He is still in her life and I respect that.
Has your family accepted it?
My family has no problem. My uncle has a stepdaughter as well and my mum is just happy I found someone who makes me happy. Ella calls my mum grandma and they have a great relationship.
What would you advise men in a similar situation?
Don’t try too hard to be a daddy first. Just take your time. Learn and let the kids trust you. Don’t hide anything, but most importantly, If you’re not willing to be in it long term, don’t agree to meet the kids. Be respectful. You are coming in as a third wheeler and you have to earn your place in their lives.
