A matatu driver charged with stealing a bath mixer from Gertrude Children’s Hospital has revealed that his father works in the same facility.

Dominic Ambutsa, 23, was accused of stealing the bath mixer valued at Sh30,000 from the hospital’s store in Nairobi on April 16.

The court heard that the accused, who lives with his father in the hospital compound, was found with a bath mixer which he was carrying in a polythene bag.

Ambutsa was searched by security personnel manning the main gate who found him with the item.

The suspect allegedly took advantage of the fact that his father works at the hospital to sneak into the store where he allegedly stole the mixer. He was arrested and later taken to Muthaiga Police Station.

Ambutsa denied the charges and pleaded with the court for lenient bond terms, claiming a friend had asked for his help to sneak out the mixer.

“I didn’t mean to steal the bath mixer. I was helping my friend to sneak it out of the compound,” he pleaded. He was released on a cash bail of Sh20,000.

His trial starts on July 8.
