Ngara residents want hawkers around the area evicted.

The residents claim the hawkers are a nuisance and have blocked streets and their houses.

Officials from Ngara Residents Association told The Nairobian they have complained numerous times to City Hall but nothing has been done.

“After moving here 10 years ago, they have built semi-permanent structures along the walls of buildings, which serves as hiding dens for thieves,” Taj Habib, chairman of Ngara Residents Association said.

“They have also raided the pavements and now sell foodstuff, which is a health hazard. Where is the City Council in all this?,” he added.

“We could have gone to court but we have received death threats, which has scared us,” Habib claimed.

A spot check by The Nairobian revealed that hawkers have turned compounds behind most residential houses into toilets. The hawkers have allegedly invaded Tiwi, Kolobot, Kienjeku and Shilingi roads near Fig Tree Hotel.

The hawkers recently engaged the police, city council askaris in running battles in the area.
