Azimio-One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga's excursions to Vihiga County have paid off after he clinched 21,531 votes in Emuhaya constituency.

His competitor, Deputy President William Ruto, got 9,440 votes in the constituency.

In Sabatia constituency, the home turf of Amani National Congress party leader Musalia Mudavadi, the race was tighter with Ruto snatching a slim victory after bagging 7,375 votes against Raila's 6,977 votes in provisional results seen by The Standard on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.

Out of 50,185 registered voters in the area, only 31,664 turned out to exercise their democratic right.

Ruto got majority of his votes from Mululu Primary School polling station where Mudavadi cast his vote on Tuesday morning.

The Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate garnered 276 votes cast at the polling station, translating to 76.8 per cent of the ballots.

Raila managed to get 82 votes, accounting for 22.8 per cent of total votes cast at the station.

Agano Party presidential candidate Waihiga Mwaure managed one vote while the Roots Party of Kenya presidential contender George Wajackoyah got no votes.

The results could have come as a relief for Mudavadi who had committed to deliver at least 70 per cent of votes in western Kenya to Ruto.

An agreement reached earlier between Mudavadi, Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang'ula and Ruto guaranteed Mudavadi 30 per cent of the government, including Cabinet slots and other appointments, if the 70 per cent votes threshold is met.

Vihiga has five constituencies and by the time of going to press, Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba was leading the pack of candidates vying for the parliamentary seat.

The County IEBC Returning Officer Peter Tiyo said they were still waiting for the constituency returning officers to turn in the forms for various seats before declaring final results.

"The process of tallying is ongoing at the constituency tallying centres and we hope by end of the day we will have started receiving the forms so that we can announce the winner for the different seats," said Mr Tiyo.
