Likoni car finally pulled out of the water

The car that plunged into the Likoni Channel on September 29, 2019, has been pulled out.

South African divers and the Kenya Navy worked together to ensure the car was retrieved by use of a crane.

A brief service was held in remembrance of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu who perished in the accident.

The car was sighted on Wednesday at about 58m beneath the water surface and the government called for patience throughout the exercise.

On Thursday, Govt Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna informed the public that the retrieval of the car took long because they did not want to risk losing the two bodies.

He added that had the bodies not been in the car, they would have already pulled it out but the challenge was that they were yet to attach the hooks needed to pull out the car safely.

Journalists were also urged to be sensitive in the manner in which they handled photos of the retrieval as a sign of respect to the affected families.
