I remember with nostalgia receiving two job offers from two leading firms. During our time, working for the Government was only meant to buy time before landing lucrative offers in the private sector. It was the Government's responsibility to provide fresh graduates with jobs. Upon employment, whether in the civil service or private sector, the human resource department would keenly document employment contracts and conduct background checks. By the time an employee reported to his or her new workplace, everything had been meticulously put in place, including where to seat and who to report to.

Human resource was the face of the company. The heartbeat of any company or project is its people, not machines, money, or market share or products. That some employees today are working without any signed contract and a guaranteed salary is a reflection of how low our human resource departments have sank. Human resource managers and institutes must now stand up to be counted.
