Did you know that some pets have their teeth brushed? Well, now you do.

Not only that, but they also wear diapers. However, this is for pets that live indoors, not the mongrels and strays that cause a nuisance in the neighbourhood.

The pets put on these diapers to prevent them from soiling the house. This is especially so for pet owners who live in flats and apartments.

Christopher Ndiba makes it even easier for pet owners by providing general grooming services for pets.

“This includes washing, shampooing, shaving their fur, trimming their claws and brushing their teeth,” he explains, adding that pets, just like human beings, also require grooming. “We also sell items like collars, leashes and pet clothing.”

Ndiba, who runs Liondiwan Pet Services, says the modern per owner is quite sophisticated unlike in the olden days when the only thing that mattered was feeding the pets.

“When your indoor pet is well-groomed, it reflects in their environment,” he says. “For example, you rarely find fur floating all over the seats and carpets. Your seats are also in good shape as the pets do not use them to sharpen their claws.”

Since cats like scratching things, Liondiwan Pet Services also provides items like a pole scratcher, tied with a sisal rope and a tiny ball attached to it.

“The cat uses the pole for scratching, thereby reducing instances where they will sharpen their claws on seats; and it also uses the ball for playing,” explains Ndiba.

The pole is attached to a padded support at the base, which the cat can use for sleeping or relaxing.

And speaking of sleeping, Ndiba also makes different types of beds for cats and dogs. Most of the beds are made of sisal baskets whose inside is padded using foam mattresses and covered by fabric.

There is however a special category of beds known as the luxury bed. This one has a frame just like for humans but raised only about five centimetres above the floor, with a very fluffy mattress. Ndiba explains that the luxury bed is ideal for keeping the pets warm as it doesn’t come into contact with the floor, particularly during the cold season.

Ndiba, who started off by selling carpets along Ngong Road told The Nairobian that his interest in pets was piqued by the many clients who kept asking for pet products.

“It is then that I decided to diversify my business by providing pet services. The business has been quite satisfactory since then,” he explains.

He however relocated to his home along Ngotho Road in Riruta Satelite, when Ngong Road was being expanded to become a dual carriage.

“My clients still get in touch with me through Liondiwan Pet Services, on my Facebook page,” he says, adding that his business grew when he started operating on the online platform. He also has an Instagram page.

Ndiba’s main outlet for his pet products is through supermarkets. “I also sell these products in bulk for those who wish to sell them elsewhere,” adds the father of two.

He now plans to expand into the field of providing boarding and lodging for pets. Yes, you got that right. Pet boarding services come in handy for pet owners who travel and have no one to leave their animals with.
