A woman who denied abandoning her baby unattended in a church has been released on a cash bail of Sh30,000.

On the fateful day, Florence Shamah Mung’au was apprehended when she went back to the church to look for the child in the evening.

Shamah is facing charges of abandoning the child on January 23 at God’s Grace Prophetic Ministries in Kamulu shopping centre in Nairobi during the morning hours.

The court heard that the accused carried the baby to the church and lied to a cleaner that the pastor had instructed her to leave it on a bench.

She then disappeared to an unknown place for the rest of the day.

The child is said to have become restless and started crying uncontrollably due to hunger forcing the cleaner to carry and soothe him.

The child was then taken to the local police station where a report of neglect was made before he was taken to a children’s home.

Later that evening, the mother went to the police station after being tipped that she had been reported for leaving her child unattended.

She was arrested and later charged after interrogations.

She, however, denied the charge of neglect contrary to section 127 1(a) of the Children’s Act.

The matter shall be mentioned on February 9.
