Kiambu, Kenya: Kiambu based human rights lawyer Gathii Irungu was elected to fill in the position of Kiambu Assembly Speaker which fell vacant after the impeachment of Nick Ndichu.
Gathii garnered 56 votes out of 84 total cast votes in an election that went for two rounds and involved five candidates.
In the first round, Gathii got 52 votes while his closest competitor Peter Njau garnered 31 votes and Julie Waweru got only one vote.
Agatha Ngotho and Margaret Ndehi got nil each.

According to the Standing Orders, a candidate can only be declared the winner at the first round after garnering two thirds of the total cast votes.
In this case a candidate was supposed to garner 58 votes which none of them did.
