MERU, KENYA: Four people were Saturday morning killed in a road accident that occurred along the Meru-Isiolo Road involving a matatu and a trailer.

Five others were injured in the accident which occurred when a Townace public service vehicle rammed into the rear side of a trailer that was moving on the same direction at about 3 am at Mungania area.

According to police the deceased  included three passengers and the driver of the matatu.

Those injured were taken to the Kiirua hospital with multiple injuries.

Traffic commandant Charlton Muriithi said they suspect the driver of the ill fated matatu fell asleep on the steering because of fatigue.

"The area is flat with no brake signs and has poor visibility. We suspect he fell a sleep but investigations are ongoing," said Muriithi.

The Saturday morning accident brings to a total more than 20, the number of people who have died in road accidents since New Year. The accidents have been blamed on driver error.

Ten people died on Thursday along the Meru-Embu highway when a matatu collided with a lorry while four died along the Machakos-Nairobi highway when a salon car rolled off the road. There are spirited campaigns to reduce the road carnage in Kenya which is high.
