Winners of this year's Sportsman of the Year Awards (Soya) may get more money, organisers announced.

Soya panel chairman Chris Mbaisi has said they are considering increasing the prize money for the different categories and has appealed to more sponsorships to make this possible.

"We are expecting some changes in the awards this year and this may include increasing the prize money. We have always had the plan of giving our winners more money to appreciate their efforts,"

"For this to be possible we need more money and we take this opportunity to ask sponsors to come on board and support our initiative," he said.

Mbaisi was speaking when he received Sh3 million from National Bank of Kenya towards the awards.

The amount is an almost two hundred per cent increase from what the bank gave last year as they donated Sh1 million.

Speaking during the hand-over NBK Deputy Managing Director Isaiah Mworia said the bank appreciates the role sports plays in the country and hence their continued support.

"When we were approached three years ago to be part of this awards, we did not hesitate because we wanted to contribute to the well-being of sports. Over the years, we have seen our athletes do well and fly the country’s flag high and we believe they deserve to be rewarded," he said.
