By Victor Kipkoech Langat, 10, Dr Steury Memorial Primary School, Bomet.

My school was named after a medical doctor, Dr Ernest Steury. He was an American missionary who came to Tenwek Mission Hospital many years ago.

Dr Steury treated many sick people for many years before he returned home to the United States of America. When he died, the hospital workers built a school and named it after him in his memory.

School starts at 8am and ends at 5.15pm for older children and 2.30pm for nursery school pupils. There are 10 classrooms — eight for older pupils and two for nursery pupils.

Our school has one kitchen, a dining hall and a small bookstore. Our head teacher, Mr Ngetich, shares an office with the bursar. His deputy has an office near the staff room where all teachers mark exercise books. There are 10 teachers. Other staff are the bursar, watchman, cooks and a matron. There are 360 pupils in the school. There are 36 students in my class. Last year, Standard Eight candidates passed well and joined good secondary schools. My school has a green field where children learn sports and different games. The many trees in the compound make it look like a forest. The matron has a small office where she keeps her medicines. The school also prepares nice lunch for us. We have assembly every Monday and Friday. I like going to school everyday and I wish all the children all over the country could come to my school. The motto of our school is ‘A sure foundation’.
