Home club’s Joyce Masai and Sigona’s professional golfer Charles Wangai are the overall winners of the second leg of the 2019 KCB Road to Masters Pro-Am Championship that ended at the Par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club, Mombasa, on Saturday.
Playing off handicap 12, Masai who captained Nyali Club in 2017, carded an excellent 43 stableford points to claim the amateur title ahead of 200 golfers.
Her victory came after rolling thirteen pars with single bogey shots in both nines.
“I played well today and I’m proud to be the winner of the tourney. Playing at the Karen Masters Pro-Am is a dream come true, a great opportunity to brush shoulders with local and international pros,” said Masai.
She will lead the next lot of six qualifiers to the KCB Karen Masters Pro-Am which will curtain raise the Sunshine Tour-sanctioned main event at the Par 71 Karen Country Club from June 23.
Other qualifiers are men’s winner handicap 9 Joseph Oluoch on 43 points, guest winner handicap 19 Fredrick Wagura from Golf Park who had 38 points and the junior winner, handicap 8 Andrew Wahome, who also carded 38points.
Machakos handicap 26 Ibrahim Lande, who is also the KCB Bank Platinum Relations Manager also gained a slot after taking home the staff prize on 38 points.
Nyali’s Abubakar Bajaber got the six qualifiers slot through the wildcard which for the second time running has been determined with a lucky dip of scorecards returned to the “19th hole”.
In the professional category, Sigona’s home professional Charles Wangai emerged the overall winner in a two-day round total of 141 gross (74,67) taking home Sh85,000.
Muthaiga’s Greg Snow was second on 143 gross (69,74) collecting Sh55,000 while club-mate Frank Matilo on 144 gross (74,70) received Sh45,000 for the third place.
KCB Coast Regional Business Manager Jane Isiaho thanked the club and golfers for the successful event. “We believe in growing sports talent for local and international competition and by doing so, is our way of using golf to promote sports tourism in Kenya,” said Isiaho.
Each of the five legs of the series is being used as qualification rounds for amateurs who will play at the forthcoming 2019 Karen Masters Pro-Am. The third round of the Series now heads to Thika Sports Club.
