The stage is set for this year’s Nairobi Region Teachers Training Colleges Athletics slated for today and tomorrow at Thogoto Teachers Training College.
The event will bring together teaching trainees from 13 colleges across the region who will be battling for tickets to the nationals.
Hosts Thogoto will be seeking to extend their dominance and defend the men’s title. However, they will face stiff competition from bitter rivals Machakos, who finished second last year as well as Kitui, Mwingi and Narok.
Kitui, who dominated the women’s competition last year, will be out to stamp their authority in the region. Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) will be hoping to rule the field events as they did in 2016. The Kasarani-based trainees won most of the medals on offer. KISE captain Silvester Kiprono said they were ready to defend their honour in field events. “They are our specialty and we don’t expect this year to be any different because we have trained hard for this year’s challenge. Even so, we shall avoid being over-confident." [Elizabeth Mburugu]
