Business was paralyzed in Garissa town after the Garissa-Nairobi highway was cut off for hours following an accident in which a lorry ferrying livestock overturned.

The lorry which was coming from Garissa blocked a crucial bridge about 5 kilometers from Mwingi town on Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of passengers to and from Wajir, Mandera and Garissa were also stranded for over six hours without food or drink after their journey came to a sudden halt at the bridge.

Essential commodities like vegetables, newspapers, bread and milk ran out after delivery vehicles were caught up in the early morning incident which resulted in a traffic snarl up extending for nearly four kilometres.

Police said it took long to remove the lorry and injured animals because of lack of equipment for the job. The areas rely on the main highway for supply of crucial goods most of which come from Nairobi.
