Veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho paid a heartfelt tribute to his late wife Wairimu Gaitho who died on Saturday, December 3.
Speaking at the International Christian Centre in Nairobi during the funeral service of his wife, Macharia described Wairimu as an accommodative person who loved him dearly.
"My life partner, we loved, we fought, we lived. We made a family, built a lovely home. We were, in many ways, very different, but we learnt to accommodate and tolerate one another, adopt each other's ways and likes. We reggaed together. We even, on occasions, watched soccer together, and learnt life lessons together," he said in the eulogy statement.
The journalist said he'll dearly miss his spouse who had become an extremely essential support system to him.
"Our politicians will continue to bicker, and Brazil will still be the favourite [team] to win the [2022] World Cup [in Qatar]. All those things that take our time are important indeed, but none of them will ever be important to keeping the world turning than the people around us," he said.
"We can draw up timetables for elections, sporting events, hit movies, industries shutting down, failing rains, collapsing buildings or dry taps, but we will remember that there are things we must never take for granted."
Wairimu, an entrepreneur, died of cancer while receiving treatment at the MP Shah's High Dependency Unit (HDU).
She had been diagnosed with cancer in 2021, and went to India for treatment in November that year.
In February 2022, she returned to Kenya feeling better.
The cancer, however, recurred. Unfortunately, she lost the battle on December 3.
