P: How and when did you get into music?
J: Popularly referred to as Jay by my fans I used to take part in school talent shows alongside a friend and a schoolmate by the name Dennis Kibet aka Deno.
In 2003 my interest in music grew a notch higher as I begun composing and writing my own songs.
In 2004 I recorded Gonga Ndani with Ousmane that took the local charts by storm.
P: What followed next?
J: In 2005, at the age of 18, I collaboed with local rapper Chris Kantai in the song Haterz, and another one Kiswahili with Jua Cali the same year.
When I joined Daystar University I decided to take a break from music, but still managed to record a song Ooh featuring Gaza. This did not go down well with the school administration leaving me with no choice but to quit music and concentrate in my studies until last year when I emerged with a hit song Munene. This aside I have also featured in Calvo Mistari’s song Too Fine besides having done a video with rapper Collo — Radio Live — yet to be released.
P: Your first show?
J: In 2004, at Starehe Boys during an Insyder function. I curtain raised for Necessary Noize and was initially very nervous considering how popular they were at the time. But despite this, the crowd loved our song Gonga Ndani supporting us all the way.
P: Celeb transformation?
J: Initially I had a habit of blow-drying my hair or applying chemical to make it look different. With time I moved to having a clean cut before sticking to mo-hawk.
