Pata potea men to spend one month in jail

Two men will have to spend one month in jail or pay Sh1,000 fine each after they were found guilty of gambling on city streets.

The court heard that the men sometimes dropped their cards on the ground in an elaborate plan to rob passers-by who thought they were helping by picking the cards for them.

The two are said to work in cahoots with other men who were not in court. The two, James Mugendi and Alex Oduor, were arrested on April 19 at the city centre playing the pata potea game in public without permit.

According to police, the accused whose accomplices fled the scene, use unscrupulous means to con unsuspecting passers-by.

Some witnesses told police the accused also apply unknown powder on the cards to cast a spell on those who decide to try their luck at the game. They pleaded guilty and asked the court for leniency because they are young and unemployed.
