While it is important to get a sofa in the right colour, it is also vital to get one that is durable. Cheap furniture can break and look out of shape within a year of constant use

There is more to buying a sofa than just going to the shop, picking one and bringing it home. Not only is sofa expensive, but it also takes up a lot of space in your room visually and literally.

Dos and don’ts

• One of the biggest furniture investments you will make is a sofa set. Sofas cost a lot of money and take up a lot of space, yet they are where you and your family will spend a lot of time. Ensure you get the best sofa for your investment.

• Consider how you will use the sofa. Is it for TV watching, curling up with a good book or formal entertainment? There is no point in getting a stiff sofa if you plan to put your feet up and watch TV. Neither do you want your guests to sink into the cushions and not be able to get up.

• Buy the best quality you can afford. A sofa of average quality should last at least ten years while a high-end sofa should last up to 25 years.

• Test out the sofa set before buying. While you are in the shop, sit on it, lie on it and put your feet up if that is what you will be doing at home. Is it comfortable? Are the arms the right height for taking a nap or reading a book? Decide if you prefer loose back cushions or attached.

• Measure the seat. Make sure to take note of its width, depth, seat and arm height. Ensure it will fit through doorways, around corners and up the stairs if necessary.

• Have it covered in an appropriate fabric. If you have children and pets, you need something that is either easy to clean or can hide dirt. Choose a durable fabric. Leather is long lasting and attractive. Velvets and other fabrics look lovely but wear out with heavy use over the years.

• DON’T be fooled. Cheap can be expensive. Some of the sofa sets sold on the roadside are poorly constructed with cheap wood and low quality fabric. Check closely and get value for your money.
