Sifuna is expected to pay the bride price, including 10 head of cattle

A man in Trans-Nzoia County has seven days to pay bride price demanded by his father-in-law.

A Kitale court granted Bernard Simiyu his wishes to get bride price from his son-in-law Issac Sifuna after living with his daughter for 10 years.

Sifuna eloped with Simiyu’s daughter Branice Naliaka while she was in high school and since then, he has not paid the bride price to her parents. Naliaka was 18 years old at the time. The couple has been blessed with two children.

The magistrate ordered Sifuna to pay the bride price in the next seven days or risk being auctioned.

Sifuna is expected to pay the bride price, including 10 head of cattle, two goats, Sh10,000 cash, two blankets, gumboots,  a Godfather hat and a coat.

“My daughter was in school when she disappeared from home. I discovered that she was living with this man and yet I have not received bride price from him,” Simiyu told the court.

Simiyu accused Sifuna and his father Patrick Bulima, of failing to honour an agreement to pay part of the bride price.

He alleged that Sifuna and Bulima had on September, 2016 agreed in writing that they will pay two cows, but have since reneged on the promise.

Bulima, the first defendant, admitted that he failed to honour the agreement but requested the court for more time to pay the bride price.

“It is true we have not honoured the agreement, but we are requesting this court to give us more time to look for the cows,” Bulima pleaded with the court.

In her verdict, Kitale Resident Magistrate Mary Osoro noted that the plaintiff had proved his case.

“I am persuaded by the testimony before this court that the plaintiff had proved his case to the required standard,” she ruled.

Osoro added that, “I hold that the first defendant as the father of the groom is indebted to the plaintiff topay bride price.”

The court issued a seven-day notice to auction the property of the defendants should they fail to pay the bride price.
