The riot left principal, several students injured and school property destroyed

A number of students from Nairobi’s Jamhuri High School have been injured after a clash erupted among the students on Tuesday 23rd January.

The brawl left 35 students injured. Four have been admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital and one at Guru Nanak having sustained stab wounds.

The school Principal Fred Awuor also got injured in the fight and had to be rushed to hospital.

According to sources privy to the situation that prompted the knife-fight at the school, it all started with allegations of religious discrimination by the administration of the school.

A faction of the students’ body accused the administration of favouring students allied to a particular religion.

The overnight brawl at the Ngara based school with 1500 students, enrolled either for the Day or Boarding programs offered by the institution, was first contained by the administration only to reignite in the morning.

Police bosses visited the school on Wednesday morning to investigate the incident and were holed up in a meeting with the school’s administration.

The administration has since closed the school indefinitely.
