Award winning singer, songwriter and actress Lauryn Hill was yesterday sentenced to jail for tax evasion. The 37 year old plead guilty to charges of tax evasion last year after she failed to file tax returns for her income during the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. This lengthy procrastination has cost her 3 months of her freedom in jail and 3 more months under house arrest.
Lauryn, in her defence said she had planned to pay her taxes, the timing was just never right. BBC quoted her saying, "I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them, I had an economic system imposed on me."
The singer shot her way to fame by being the front woman of the group Fugees. She went solo in 1998 with her album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, selling over 8 million copies and winning 8 Grammys awards. She is the mother of 6 children, 5 of whom are with Bob Marley’s son, Rohan Marley.
Since the success of her album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, she has yet to release any more music. Rumor has it that she recently signed a record deal with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, which could mean she is working on new songs.
Maybe the prison bars are the inspiration that Lauryn Hill needed.
