Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has commended Mt Kenya University for promoting peace initiatives.
Speaking during the official opening of the newly Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre (MKCC) at MKU main campus in Thika, the CS assured Kenyans his ministry was on top of things, and well prepared on security matters. “... let all retreat to this facility to seek peaceful engagements with each other,” Dr Matiang'i said.
He said a new police post would be set up near the university. “We shall not sit and watch innocent students and Kenyans killed or their properties stolen by a few thugs whose aim is to reap where they have not laboured. I have directed the Inspector General to ensure a new police post is established in this area,” Matiangi said.
This is after MKU Vice-Chancellor Deogratius Jaganyi decried worrying cases of muggings targeting students.
Matiang'i thanked MKU for planning to host a pre-General Election peace conference at the new facility next year, after the MKCC recently hosted an international conference on Entrepreneurial Universities of Africa. “I urge many other groups to use this facility, as it is available for public use, to discuss peace agenda, and pray for peace and unity,” the CS said.
The facility is hosting the International YUNUS Social Business Academic Conference and the International YUNUS Social Business Summit.
