Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s attacks on Deputy President William Ruto have now become personal and therefore unwarranted.

This shows that Joho is bitter about the failure by Ruto to support former Prime Minister and his party leader Raila Odinga, a move that has locked the latter out of the presidency three times.

The Mombasa governor should perhaps stop blaming ODM’s political misfortunes on Ruto whom they mishandled during the grand coalition government.

During that time, Ruto was kicked out of the Cabinet over alleged corruption. In fact, Raila himself tried to suspend him but his decision was reversed by then President Mwai Kibaki.

Joho knows well that without the support of Ruto, CORD is not going anywhere and this is why he has been persistent in criticising Ruto even on matters that have nothing to do with the deputy president.

Leaders should engage in issue-based politics and not tribal campaigns that have divided Kenyans and sometimes caused them to fight.

Joho and his colleagues in the Opposition should avoid these personalised attacks against members of Jubilee. In any case, Ruto is in a different league of politics compared to Joho.
