Regulate social media for our own good

The recent revelations that WhatsApp was used to facilitate KCSE exam leaks underscores the need to regulate social media generally.

What is an otherwise noble technological invention meant to promote togetherness and communication has turned out to sometimes do the opposite.

People are vile, arrogant and abusive online. In Kenya especially, tribalism has been heightened in social media platforms.

The platforms that should ideally promote peace, cohesion and understanding among communities are now being used to preach hatred, tribalism and sectionalism.

I think something takes over the minds of even ordinarily rational people once they hit the keyboard or the touch screen.
