Rebecca Kamau finished in fifth position in the 200m individual medley race, an event won by legendary Zimbawean Kirsty Coventry on Thursday evening. Kamau timed 2:20.40 with Coventry (2:16.05), South African pair Marlies Ross and Rene Warnes in 2:17.57 and 2:18.98 and Rwioda Heshem of Egypt in 2:19.76.

Hamdan Bayusuf was sixth best in the men’s 100m backstroke, in 1:00.47, way behind another South African duo Richard Ellis and David de Villiers, who stopped the clock in 55.83 and 55.84. Two Egyptians — Mohamed Samy (55.84) and Mohamed Khaled (56.31) — followed, while an Algerian Riyad Djendouci was fifth.

In the women’s 50m freestyle, won by Farida Osman in 25.12 with South Africa’s Karin Prinsloo in second position, Sylvia Brunlehner finished sixth in 26.92.

The 4x100m medley mixed team finished sixth behind Egypt, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tunisia and Algeria. In Kenya’s team were Bayusuf, Kamau, Issa Abdellah and Brunlehner.

No Kenyan qualified for the final of men’s freestyle yesterday morning, with Issa Abdellah finishing fifth and Edward Ilako third in the fourth heat. Ilako was ranked 10th, thus a reserve for the final, and Abdellah 13th.

Kimani Maina was fifth in the second heat of 200m individual medley and Abdulmajid Kadermani seventh. Only Kimani was a reservist for the final, that was to follow later in the evening to close the swimming programme in these games.

Meanwhile, hosts Congo Brazzaville joined Nigeria in the All Africa Games football semi-finals by snatching a late 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso Thursday, adds AFP reports.

But it was a far from convincing passage to the knockout stage by the home nation with success coming via an own goal four minutes from time in Brazzaville. The Congolese had been on the back foot at Stade de l’Unite for some time before they forced a corner from which Fousseni Beao headed into his own net.

Success coupled with Sudan and Zimbabwe drawing 0-0 at the same time in another Brazzaville stadium ensured the hosts of a top-two finish.
Congo have six points in Group A, Burkina Faso three and Sudan and Zimbabwe one each.
