Kenya: A confrontation over a debt at the Githurai 45, Nairobi turned tragic when a man was shot dead by a stray bullet fired by a police officer.
Police had rushed to calm a crowd at a market in the area when a confrontation ensued.
In the confusion, police fired in the air to gain freedom and disperse the crowd. During the confusion, a pedestrian was hit by a stray bullet, killing him instantly. The officers who were involved in the shooting escaped from the scene as other traders staged a protest demanding action.
Ruiru MP Esther Gathogo visited the scene and promised to ensure justice. She wondered how and why police were being used as debt collectors.
The circumstances that led to the confrontations were not clear. Kasarani police boss Francis Sang said they are investigating the incident.
