The six suspects linked to the murder of former Chief Whip George Thuo have requested to be released on bail pending the hearing of their case.

On Tuesday, lawyer Cliff Ombeta told Justice Roseline Korir that the reasons advanced by the prosecution were not compelling enough to deny them bail.

Paul Wainaina, Christopher Lumbasio Andika, Andrew Karanja Wainaina, Samuel Kuria Ngugi, Esther Ndinda Mulinge and Ruth Vanessa Irungu have denied murdering the former MP. Wainana is the proprietor of Club Porkies in Thika while Lumbasio was a friend of the late Thuo. Ndinda is the waitress who allegedly served Thuo, while Vanessa is said to have bought Thuo a beer.

Ombeta said the affidavit by police was not sufficient to deny his clients bail. He further argued that the state seeks to call 53 witnesses, which might take long before the accused are admitted to bail. Justice Korir is expected to give a ruling on March 20.
