Over 800,000 pupils who sat this year’s Standard Eight examinations will have their results on December 31. Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) Chief Executive Officer Paul Wasanga said the date was arrived at after consultations with Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi.

“We have finally settled on December 31 because as a council we have worked round the clock to ensure the results are ready,” he said.

Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results have traditionally been released immediately after Christmas celebrations except last year when the dates were moved forward following the teachers’ strike.

Mr Wasanga said contrary to previous claims over marking boycott by a teachers union, the turn out was ‘overwhelming.’ He said close to 10,000 teachers participated in the marking exercise. Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers had threatened to rally their members including primary teachers to boycott this years marking exercise.

Some 844,475 pupils sat this year’s KCPE examination in 23,819 centres. The exams boss said Knec engaged 132,187 contracted professionals to manage field administration, 24,182 supervisors, 52,730 invigilators, 48,200 security personnel and 7,075 examiners.

Wasanga said candidates and schools that were involved in examination irregularities would have their results canceled.
