MOMBASA, KENYA: Lootenants emerged the best in the ‘Vishindo Kisiwani’ show during the Standard Media Group’s Mombasa Bureau sports day at the Coast Academy, Mombasa.
The event brought together staff drawn from the editorial, circulation, commercial, administration, security, technical and graphic departments. It was graced by the group’s Human Resource Manager Masha Muchiri, Nairobian Managing Editor Charles Otieno and Commercial Manager Jacinta Awour.
The staff competed in Norwegian football, but it was a long shot for those who were not strong enough to run across the field.
The competitors formed two teams, The Sharks and The Lootenants, taking part in basketball, swimming, Norwegian football, athletics, obstacle events and tug-of-war.
Interestingly, The Sharks were struggling in swimming at the well-kept Coast Academy’s swimming pool, though they still managed to edge out their rivals.
The Sharks swimming team of Moses Baya, Joseph Njoroge, Ali Chabo and Ernest Ndunda won the swimming relay.
In basketball, The Sharks led by Philip Mwakio once again carried the day with a classic three-pointer winning shot. Mwakio played alongside Ferdinand Omondi, Ndunda and Ishaq Jube for the crown.
In tug-of-war, which was the climax of the day, well-built Omondi Onyango had little difficulties in pulling his opponents in straight two sets. The Sharks went further to win the obstacle events to bag 83 points.
The Lootenants who had benefitted from a 15 point bonus for arriving on time were declared the overall winners with 88 points.
The Lootenants won the football match 3-2 with Malacki Marlon, Onesmus Mwaria and Herman Mwachofi scoring while Stanley Mwahanga and Ferdinand Omondi scored for The Sharks.
Mwahanga and Mwaria were named the Most Valuable Players.
KTN reporter Ferdinand Omondi took over the disco jockey’s role.
