Turkana County: Detectives are investigating a syndicate suspected to be behind infiltration of fake alcohol products in some bars in Turkana County.

A senior police detective confirmed they impounded fake Smirnoff Vodka 250ml bottles at a popular depot in Lodwar town.

The matter has raised eyebrows among the public and alcohol consumers, who claim fake products are being distributed in many bars.

They fear the products may be in major towns among them Lodwar, Kakuma and Lokichoggio.

A witness claimed he was sold beer late at night in a local restaurant in Lodwar town, but later discovered that the ‘beer’ contained foreign substances.

Turkana DCIO Henry Chebii disclosed he was also a victim of the syndicate.

“I bought a vodka 250ml bottle at a popular bar and restaurant in Lodwar town but I was shocked to discover that the bottle contained foreign bodies. Efforts to contact the manufacturers were futile after they failed to respond to the matter but we are carrying out investigations,” Mr Chebii said.

Kenya Breweries Limited communication officer Joseph Sunday said they were carrying out investigation to ascertain the source of the product.

“We want the complainants to provide us with details of the products so that we see a way forward. We will take action once we have established facts about the products, whether they originate from our company or not, then we will make a fair judgment,” Sunday told The Standard.
