Kisumu, Kenya: Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) closed down a radio station in Kisumu during a crackdown on stations operating without licences.

Officials from CA accompanied by the police, arrested two radio presenters and confiscated apparatus belonging to Sky FM, a local radio station which transmits in local language, Dholuo.

Sky FM's transmitters were dismantled at Kiboswa while other equipment were taken from the station located at Pembe Tatu estate.

County Commander Nelson Njiri said the two presenters were arrested because they were the ones found at the studio by the time CK went there on Tuesday 8.30am.

Mr Njiri said the station was allegedly established without the knowledge of CA which is a crime.

"It is purely criminal to operate without a licence, and that is why we arrested the two and we are looking for the owners of the station," said Njiri.

right procedure

"The two suspects will appear in court on Tuesday afternoon and charged for establishing and using radio apparatus without licence," he added.

He said right procedure was followed before action was taken including considering complains made in regards to the station.

A month ago, CA executed warrants to search and subsequently impound equipment used to transmit unauthorised radio broadcast frequencies in Nyanza.

"No one would be happy to tune in to their radio stations and hear some interference from a source you are not aware of," said Njiri who added that there have been complains in interference in frequencies.
