Mombasa, Kenya: The changing global trend in the tourism industry has led to creative ways of attracting more tourists — both local and foreign.

The initiatives have seen a number of tourist establishments at the Coast fully embrace stay homes, also called apartment hotels or aparthotel. The concept enables accommodation family travellers to go for holiday as a family unit, unlike previously when people travelled alone or as a couple.

One such resort is the Pangoni Beach Resort located in a secluded spot on Shanzu Beach on the edge of Mombasa County.  Pangoni Beach Resort General Manager Timothy Kagambi said the setting of the resort in luscious tropical gardens around along the Indian Ocean has made it a scenic attraction to both families; upmarket and high end conference delegates.

“Pangoni is a Suites Resort offering accommodation ranging from one, two and three bedroom suites. Whether you are on a family holiday, celebrating a special occasion or attending a business conference, our elegant and spacious suites will spoil you for choice and contemporary luxury,’’ Kagambi said.

“It is evident that over the last one decade, things have not been the same in regards to overseas tourist arrivals from key source markets mainly Europe,’’ he said.

He said that over dependence on the overseas market dealt the local industry a devastating blow owing to a number of reasons ranging from economic crunch to spate of terrorist attacks and insecurity. “With less and lesser foreign tourists jetting in to holiday, hoteliers had to seek other ways to remain relevant and stay afloat, even as numbers dwindled.”

An apartment hotel is often fitted with most things the average home would require. The Pangoni Beach Resort has 90 room-size apartments with conference facilities available for smaller groups.

Another of Mombasa’s aparthotel is the Tamarind Village which sits near the Old Nyali bridge.
