Kevin who plays for Fortuna Dusseldorf landed sickeningly on the turf following an aerial duel with St Pauli’s Bernd Nehrig.
The German defender lay motionless on the hard ground with panicked-looking team-mates waving for immediate medical assistance.
Medics took the defender off the field of play on a stretcher with his neck held in place with a brace.
The extent of his injury was realized on his arrival at hospital, where doctors quickly discovered he had broken his neck.
Kevin Akpoguma is now recovering in hospital after the horrific injury.
