Charity organization gives scholarships to Kenyan students

Nairobi, Kenya - A charity organisation has given scholarships to more than 100 students in secondary schools and colleges. The Tim Wanyonyi Foundation managed by Paraplegic Tim Wanyonyi, now seeks to award more with increased funding.

Mr Wanyonyi said the foundation that caters for bright but needy students from poor backgrounds in secondary schools and colleges was born out of the need to assist disadvantaged families who fail to take children to school due to lack of school fees.

It was mooted five years ago. “We support bright but needy students who are disadvantaged, disabled and orphans mostly in secondary schools but also those who want to join colleges,” said Wanyonyi, who is also Westlands MP and Kenyan Paraplegic Organisation executive director.

“We focus on education for children with special needs. Our board of Trustees has a way of finding out needy students by sending someone on the ground to assess. This year, we sponsored two students to join national schools while others joined county and local schools.”

He said the foundation is looking for funds from organisations such as Rockfeller and Ford foundations to support more children in schools.
