Agrochemical firm, Orion East Africa has announced plans to partner with an American carbon credit sourcing company, Carbon Group as pressure mounts globally for drastic action to curb greenhouse gases.

Orion, specializing in manufacture and distribution of agro-chemicals in the East African region, would operate the credit scheme under its GreenEarth brand.

A carbon credit site in Australia. Orion will be charged with the task of raising awareness and identifying organizations eligible for carbon credits in Kenya.

When the scheme is commissioned next year, Orion will be charged with the task of raising awareness and identifying organizations eligible for carbon credits in Kenya.

The Carbon Group provides turnkey carbon-reduction project development assistance and full-service carbon credit wholesaling.Carbon Group Managing Director Anand Appulingam said the American company is currently working to develop an array of socially beneficial and cost-effective carbon-reduction projects across Africa, the Mediterranean and India.

"Carbon Group believes that the countries and communities most vulnerable to global climate change should benefit from international efforts to slow greenhouse-gas emissions," he said.

At the root of human-induced global climate change is the emission of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide is the most prevalent greenhouse gas.

The 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which came into force in 2005, placed a cap on greenhouse gas emissions in many developed countries.

Through a series of flexibility mechanisms, the protocol allows capped countries to both trade emissions rights and to seek low-cost emissions-reductions in non-capped developing countries.

By limiting the supply of rights to emit, Kyoto imposed a market-determined price on greenhouse-gas emissions.

According to Carbon Group, Kenya currently has one registered project and another six conceived initiatives.

Appulingam said Orion East Africa with its new push into bio fertilizers and adoption of Agrisoc, an organic soil conditioner that sinks carbon into the soil, has a chance to make Kenya the leader in carbon credits in Sub Saharan Africa.

The Carbon Group specializes and in sourcing emissions-reduction offsets and credits – for both voluntary and compliance markets - in sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries.

Carbon Group serves as a bridge between companies with carbon liabilities and developing-country industries and communities with cost-effective carbon-reduction potential.

Certified emission reductions , are credits issued by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to developing countries - loosely called carbon credits - under the clean development mechanism scheme of the Kyoto Protocol. The CERs can be purchased by developed nations to meet their emission reduction targets.
