Maendeleo Democratic Party (MDP) leader Amisi Omukanda is dead.

The elder brother of Higher Education PS Beatrice Inyangala died in a grisly road crash near River Sasala along the Lurambi - Navakholo Road at around 3am on Wednesday.

Omukanda's body has been taken to the Kakamega funeral parlour.

"Today, I mourn with profound sadness the unbelievable demise of my brother in a road accident. In heaven and on earth, you will always be a most treasured family member. My cherished brother, friend, and political mentor is no more," shared PS Inyangala on social media.

She went on: "The pain is too much, you are the fourth of Mama's sons to bid us farewell in the most abrupt and shocking way."

Local leaders, led by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa while mourning Omukanda, described him as a charismatic leader who inspired people around him.

"I have learnt with deep sorrow, the unfortunate death of Amisi Omukanda, the leader of the MDP party in a grisly road accident. He will be remembered for his unwavering political stand from the time of his representation as a councillor in the defunct Local Authorities era," said Governor Barasa in his condolence message

He added: "To his family and members of the MDP party, on my behalf, staff of the county government and the people of Kakamega, receive our deepest sympathies."

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, in his post, termed him a self-made leader with indelible footprints in the community.

"Am saddened to learn of the death of Amisi Omukanda, a friend, political comrade and brother from our larger Batsotso family. A truly self-made leader who is leaving has indelible footprints on the socio-political destiny of our community. Fare thee well mwana weru," posted Khalwale on his Facebook account.
