A drunken census enumerator yesterday was arrested after he urinated in the living room of a family instead of counting them in Murang’a County.

Samson Ndirangu showed up to the house thoroughly sloshed and disorderly before dropping his trousers and urinating.

Ndirangu, a fourth-year student at Chuka University, was also accused of eating food meant for children at another home.

All these, he did without his enumeration gadget, saying it was lost.

Police had to book him at Murang’a District Hospital to regain consciousness.

Murang’a East OCPD Alexander Muasya said it took grilling by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers for him to tell them where the gadget was.

Ndirangu led them to his girlfriend’s house in Mukuyu market where it was found.

Officials in charge of the exercise inspected the gadget at 10 pm and found it intact.

Ndirangu has this morning pleaded guilty of contravening the oath of secrecy at a Murang’a court. He will be sentenced later in the day.

Ndirangu’s case adds to a list of dramas by enumerators across the country:

Homa Bay

A census enumerator was sacked after he abandoned his duties and returned to his boda boda business in Homa Bay County.

According to Suba Deputy County Commissioner Kamau Maina, the enumerator covered only four households on Saturday night and went home to sleep. On Sunday morning, he served only one household.

“The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics realised that the enumerator’s gadget was idle for more than the expected duration yet the enumerator had not complained,” Mr Maina said.

Nakuru

In Nakuru, a middle-aged woman was charged with selling alcohol during census night against the order by Interior CS Fred Matiang'i.

Margret Wanjiru was allegedly found selling alcoholic drinks on August 25, 2019, at Ahero Centre in Bahati, Nakuru County.

She denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Usui.

Juja

In Juja, a woman was on Monday arrested for refusing to participate in the census.

The suspect was held at Juja Police Station.

Baringo

In Baringo County, Police arrested a chief and an MCA over claims they incited residents of Baringo South to boycott the ongoing national census.
