Two men on Wednesday died in separate road accidents in Homa Bay County.

David Otieno and Meshack Omondi died after being knocked by vehicles in different parts of the county.

Otieno was knocked by a matatu when he was crossing the Homa Bay-Rongo road at Sofia estate in Homa Bay town on Tuesday.

He died a few hours later while undergoing treatment at Homa Bay county referral hospital.

Eyewitnesses said the victim was talking on the phone while crossing the road before he was hit by the vehicle.

“It seems the pedestrian was only concentrating on his phone without considering the vehicle. It became too difficult for the driver to avoid hitting him,” an eyewitness said.

Omondi was killed at Kanyadhiang’ village along Homa Bay- Kendu Bay in Rachuonyo North Sub County.

He was hit by a car that was traveling from Homa Bay town towards Kendu Bay before he died instantly.

The car lost control and veered off the road.

His body was taken to Gendia Hospital mortuary.

The car also hit and injured a motorcycle rider together with his passenger. They were rushed to Kendu Bay Sub County Hospital.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Esther Seroney said the car driver was arrested and taken to Kendu Bay police station.

“Many bottles of alcohol were found in his car. We are investigating the matters to ensure punitive legal action is taken against the culprits,” said Seroney.

The police boss urged both pedestrians and drivers to observe traffic rules.
