Dr. Fred Matiag’i move to sanitise Kenya’s unversity will see many student suffer the wrath.According to the on public universities, there is a lot of loose ends in the university education in Kenya.

Speaking during a stakeholders meeting on Thursday that brought council chairpersons, vice chancellors, chancellors and principles of university colleges, the Education Cabinet secretary hinted that he is going to effect so many changes on the university education that will make graduates attain degrees that are worthwhile.

There is a number of people who will be affected by the ongoing reforms.First and foremost those who enrolled in universities without attaining the required minimum grade of C+.So, those who bridged and those who used their P1 certificates to pursue degree programmes their fate hangs in the balance.

It is said that some universities breached the admission standards by taking students with credits and distinctions straight to second or third year.

Secondly all students who enrolled in the university under the school-based programme are going to be affected by the new measures put in place to sanitise the university education.

Another group of people who will be affected are those who use Executive Master Business Adimission doctorate studies. These type of students will have to think of what to do because their papers have been recalled and the programme suspended.

Also those who gained admission to PhD classes using executive degrees will not be allowed to teach Kenyan universities.Their honorary degrees awarded to them have been recalled on in the convention of the universities standards and guidelines.

Universities which do not keep a record of attendance to show on how the students attended their lessons will also be affected because it will be assumed that the students didn’t attend classes yet they were awarded with degrees.

It is also clear that the universities which have weak control for academic certificates, making it easy for forgery will make their students face the consequences of the Matiang’i reforms.

Students who graduate prematurely without completing a set of the study time will also be greatly affected. All the students are required to complete all hours allocated to their area of study.

Students who fail in given units will not be allowed to go to the next academic class without passing in those particular units they failed in.All the students will require their marks as evidence that they really passed in a given subject.

This will closely be monitored by the people given the responsibility to do the inspection from the ministry of education -the Commission of University Education (CUE)

Those students who are studying in programmes that have not been approved by the respective senate will not escape these reforms.

It has been discovered that some students graduate from unaccredited academic programmes.

Meanwhile, the Education CS said that all the degrees, diplomas, certificates awarded to students will be withdrawn and the universities and collages which awarded those degrees and diplomas punished accordingly.
