Would you like a brighter and smoother skin? If you would, then include microdermabrasion in your beauty routine.

Microdermabrasion is a deep form of exfoliation in which rough tiny grains are used to buff away the skin’s outer layer. After just one treatment, you’ll notice brighter- and healthier-looking skin.

However, after a series of 5 to 10 treatments, you’ll see improvements in the texture of your skin, a decrease in the appearance of fine lines, and a more even skin tone.

Microdermabrasion is useful for treating scarring, sun damage and discoloration and brightening a dull complexion. It also preps the skin so moisturizers and other skincare ingredients can be better absorbed.

You should avoid microdermabrasion if you have inflamed acne, sunburn, eczema or sensitive or irritated skin. Treatments increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, therefore you should use sunscreen and be covered

DIY treatments

Microdermabrasion treatments are usually performed at a dermatologist’s office. However, with just a few ingredients, you can make your own safe and gentle treatments that mimic the procedure. Be careful not to scrub too hard as the granules can damage your skin.

1. Bicarbonate of soda treatment

2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

½ teaspoon water

1/8 teaspoon coconut oil

1 drop of lavender essential oil (optional)

Mix all the ingredients and store in an airtight container. To use, apply the paste on clean skin and massage in a circular motion for a minute or two. Rinse off and moisturize.

2. Sugar treatment

1 cup of sugar

½ cup olive oil

1 teaspoon of lemon juice

Combine the ingredients until the mixture is smooth. Store in an airtight container for up to six months. You may also substitute salt for sugar. These treatments can be used once or twice a week.

3. Apple cider vinegar sugar treatment

1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

1 cup Demerara sugar or brown sugar

¼ cup coconut oil

1 tablespoon honey

4 drops tea tree oil

1 teaspoon coffee grinds

Blend together, store in an airtight jar and use once a week on clean skin.
