There was drama at a Dar hotel upon arrival of Kenyan basketball referee Ambrose Kisoi. One of the attendants gave him proper salute, took his luggage and led him to the reception.

Word quickly went round that ‘Usain Bolt’ was in the hotel. Soon the whole management was at the reception to have a piece of ‘Bolt’. Kisoi was offered juice and a rocking chair while others scrambled for a selfie with him.

Despite telling them he was not in any way related to the Jamaican sprinter and even showing them his passport they highly doubted him. Some said he disguised himself in order not to attract attention and publicity.

Kisoi told FeverPitch that he has been mistaken severally as Bolt. One incident was in a park in Philadelphia, US, in 2014 when a musician hurriedly left stage and rushed to hug him thinking he was the world best sprinter. The other occasion was at Radisson Hotel in Congo Brazzaville last year during the All Africa Games.

Kenyan Fiba referees faring well at the championship

The ongoing championship has fair share of officials from around the continent. Countries take pride when they sent various personnel to manage a tournament of such magnitude.

The country has not been left behind as currently there are two Kenyans umpiring in the tournament.

They are Ambrose Kisoi and Sammy Wakaba who are among the three Fiba qualified referees in the whole country. The other ref is Erick Omondi who failed to make it to Dar due to work commitments.

Kisoi warns that it took a lot of sacrifice with no financial gains to be where they are today.
