Kenya Sevens are in the Main Cup quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Sevens.

This is despite losing their last two Pool A matches against New Zealand (5-0) and France (17-10) at the Cathay Pacific- Hong Kong Stadium, yesterday morning.

They emerged second in Pool A behind New Zealand courtesy of a superior points difference over Samoa and France.

Shujaa went into Day Two of the tournament on a high after thrashing Samoa 24-0 in their opening match on Friday but lost to France in what had been primed as a decisive match.

This was just after they had narrowly lost to the All Blacks in a closely contested tie.

“Good efforts from the boys, just one mistake let us down against New Zealand.

“We should take care of the ball next time and make good use of our chances. We were good on defence, but we need to up our game on attack.

“What we analysed and knew was that they would attack our rucks and that’s exactly what they did,” Humphrey Khayange said after the first loss.

After a barren first half that saw New Zealand reduced to six men after Kurt Baker was sent to the sin bin, the All Blacks finally got the breakthrough in the second half through D.J Forbes’ unconverted try.

Kenya remained committed, rushing New Zealand on defence while remaining competitive at the breakdown as they pushed for an equaliser.

Nelson Oyoo then missed a chance for Shujaa.

Shujaa faced defending champions Fiji in the quarter-final at 6.42 am this morning. The All Blacks battle with Wales in the other quarter.
