The British government has voiced concern over the spread of Islamic radicalisation across the Coast region and pledged support to combat the problem.
British High Commissioner Christian Turner who visited Mombasa on Wednesday to meet political and security officials said UK will support community groups to the create awareness on the dangers posed by radicalisation.
This comes amid reports of widening rift between Kenya and UK over the latter's funding of human rights groups at the Coast.
"Radicalisation is a now big concern in the region. We will assist in anyway to counter this new threat through community groups and the government," said Turner.
Turner met Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa and Governor Hassan Joho and held closed door discussions and later toured the Fort Jesus Museum.
He said the UK, through the UKaid has contributed Sh740 million towards a three-year youth empowerment programme. The amount will be used to train over 8,000 youths and create 5,000 new jobs.
While urging the UK top lift it's travel advisory, Governor Joho said insecurity had brought the region's economy to its knees but insisted the situation had improved.
"We went through rough times when the town experienced several attacks but the situation has improved. We are currently working with locals to fight radicalisation," he said.
