NAKURU COUNTY: There was drama at the Naivasha G.K prison after a middle-aged woman was arrested trying to sneak in five mobile phones into the penal institution.

The phones which were hidden under the suspect's dress were allegedly meant for an inmate serving life sentence in the prison.

The woman who hails from Naivasha town was left in tears as prison warders whisked her to Naivasha police station after the arrest.

Trouble started after one of the inmates approached a warder last week with a plan to sneak in some phones in the prison at a fee.

According to the officer in charge of the prison Patrick Mwenda the warder agreed to the plan but informed his seniors who laid a trap.

The senior officer said that the warder was to get the phones and payment from the suspect before handing them over to the convict.

"The plan went as planned and the woman brought in the five mobile phones to the prison upon which she was arrested before she could pass them over to the convict," he said.

Last year, officers nabbed over 200 mobile phones and since then case of convicts using the phones to con members of the public have not been reported.

Last month, warders in the prison arrested a middle aged woman who was trying to sneak into the penal institution suspected explosives.

Meanwhile close to 100 passengers heading to Nairobi from Western Kenya caused a stir at Naivasha police station after their two buses were detained for violation of the law.

The irate passengers engaged police in a heated argument and nearly paralyzed operations as they protested the move to hold the two buses.

The buses christened Mbukinya had bad been detained by traffic officers after they were found travelling at night against the law.

One of the passengers Nick Wafula said that the drivers were arrested at around 4am and held at the police station for hours leading to the protest.

"They have arrested and locked in our drivers meaning that we cannot travel and that is why we are protesting the delay," he said.

A senior police officer who declined to be named confirmed the impasse saying that the two drivers had contravened the traffic act.

"Despite the protest from the passengers the two drivers will be arraigned in court and it is up to the bus management to send other drivers," said the officer.
