Kenyan viewers, of late, have been treated to a cocktail of all-star sex comedies. The nature of the films have elicited heated debates from all quarters.
When House of Lungula, an all-star sex comedy film was released a few months ago, it sparked polarised debate among Nairobians, with many arguing that the film was too sensual and that Kenyans were not ready for such ‘sexy’ productions.
Despite being banned from airing on local television channels, House of Lungula still managed to attract considerable viewership ‘offline’. The drama series even earned 10 nominations at the Kalasha Film and Television Awards 2014.
All-star sex drama
Historia Film, the creators of House of Lungula in co-production with Native Productions, have produced yet another all-star sex comedy, Fundi-mentals. This is a sexual and comedy drama series. Sex comedy seems to be getting more popular by the day.
Fundi-mentals narrates the story of Joseph (Gerald Langiri) and his assistant Moses (Charlie Karumi), egocentric individuals who like to think of themselves as the best fundis in Kinoo, despite their unorthodox means.
The series is spiced up when a competitor, Multinational Service Company, sets up shop in Kinoo town, therefore threatening the status quo and monopoly of the two fundis. To make their services more appealing to customers, the two introduce, to their female customers, a new type of sex-press service with a hilarious twist.
According to Alex Konstantaras, director/scriptwriter of the film: “The script was particularly inspired by the real life experiences that many of us encounter with fundis.”
He adds: “During my stay in Kenya, I have come across many wannabe fundis who come to your house to fix things, saying they are jacks of all trade. Sadly, they end up messing up everything in your house.”
Lizz Njagah who casts as Mrs Juma, a close ally of the fundi in the drama, told The Nairobian: “After the success of House of Lungula, we were challenged to take our comedies to the next level. This time round, the X-factor we intended to achieve is a funny, yet sexy production.”
Also in the cast is radio sensation Kalekye Mumo, who was making her debut in film. She says: “Since this was my first appearance in film, I encountered a number of challenges. But I believe I gave a good performance.
I didn’t know I had it in me.” Other stars cast in the film include Ojiambo Ainea, Neomi Ng’ang’a, Veronica Waceke, Ruth Maingi and Milkah Ndegwa.
