Here are some tips to guide you:
• Reduce hair breakage by ensuring it is thoroughly wet before you apply shampoo. Rinse it with cool water to seal moisture in the hair shafts.
• To have an even distribution of oils in your hair, brush it from the back to front while bending until the scalp tingles; then massage it with your fingertips.
• Thoroughly towel-drying your hair before blow drying will save you time and also avoid too much heat damage to the hair.
• Dampening your brush before brushing your hair will reduce static electricity.
• Never use a brush on wet hair as this causes breakage.
• To keep your permed hair looking fresh between shampoos, lightly mist it with fresh water and push the curls into place using your fingers.
• Is your hair dull and lifeless? This could be a sign of a poor diet. Eat healthy and reduce the amount of cholesterol and fats in your diet.
• When you colour your hair, don’t shampoo it until after two days. This gives it time to seal in the colour.
• Beer (yes you read it right), can remove residue from your hair. Mix a cup of warm water with six tablespoons of beer and pour the mixture on your hair as a final rinse.
• Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with your regular shampoo once a week if you have hair that is prone to build-up from conditioners, styling gel, or hair spray. You can then rinse and dry it as usual.
• After plaiting your hair, use gel to smooth down loose or uncontrolled hairs. Holding spray is best suited to keep designed hair in place; use it for that. For a soft finish, spray it into your palm then smooth it over the surface of the hair to control loose strands.
• To hold your hair into a ponytail with a rubber band, coat it with some oil to reduce the stress and tension on the hair.
• To control hair when you want a ‘wet’ affect, apply gel sparingly to it after styling. You can also use gel when you want a clean, off-the-face effect. Apply it to the hairline where hair tends to be shorter.
