Mandera, Kenya: One person was killed in Rhamu town on Friday evening as hundreds of scared families move out from the clash-torn area.

Rhamu, the epicentre of the conflict among Degodia and Garre clans, has become a ghost town, with members of the rival clans fleeing towards areas where their community are the majority.

Speaking to The Standard on Sunday on the phone, Rhamu Deputy County Commissioner Fredrick Ayeko said a man, who was ferrying miraa on a motorbike, was shot dead by unknown assailants near river Dau, which marks the boundary between  Kenya and Ethiopia.

“The deceased was transporting the miraa towards the town of Suftu on the Ethiopian side. He was accosted by three armed people who shot several times. They then threw his body into to the raging river,” he said.

Ayeko said the body of the victim couldn’t be found.

The deadly skirmishes between the warring clans started two weeks ago. Yesterday morning, bandits sprayed bullets on two passenger vehicles near Rhamu town.

Ayeko said the two vehicles were heading to the town from Rhamu Dimtu. The attack occurred less than a kilometre from the town near the Kenya Power station.

The county commissioner said calm has returned to the town as sufficient security personnel have been deployed.
