| Veteran Kenyan rapper, Bamboo. |
He had just returned from the United States with great expectations to revive his dwindling fame and music success. However, things did not seem to materialise and as 2012 came into a close, he declared that hip hop was more of an illuminati affair, that according to revelations God had given him in a dream.
The new development was taken with a pinch of salt. It was only a week ago that Pulse found the rapper at Club Tribeka in the company of his old hip hop friends among them Abbas.
And now, we can reveal that Bamboo is back to the secular world. As we found out this week, he has now teamed up with new comer rapping duo Coola Gang, with whom he is working a number of tracks with. So was he salvation just a ploy to get media relevance?
“I am not a religious extremist, when I heard these guy’s music, I thought they were hot and I quickly wanted to work with them,” he says.
Coola Gang, who are popularly known for their single Songa, says that Bamboo approached them with the partnership idea, which they gladly took.
“Bamboo is very controversial and he does his own thing his own way, I am inspired by him and I am looking forward to working with him in this single,” says Cool Kid, the one arm of Coola Gang.
Even though Bamboo still maintains that he is a born again Christian, friends around his circle indicate that he is still that hard-core controversial rapper he used to be back in the day.
The truth is, he has dropped his hard stance about hip hop after saying the genre was run by illuminati followers.
During an interview with Pulse last year, Bamboo announced that he had quit secular music for gospel after seeing the light. He even went ahead to narrate how some people had tried to lure him into devil worshipping.
Now, the story has changed.
“I cannot be put in a gospel box. As a matter of fact, I do not want to be classified as a gospel artiste. Yes I have some gospel songs in the works and a few collabos with gospel artistes but that’s just about it,” Bamboo says. As long as he feels that the song is hot, he is going to jump on it be it gospel or secular. Basically, he is in business.
Bamboo now says that he feels that it is upon him to take up new and young talent under his wing. He feels that he has made a name for himself here and overseas and would like to see Coola Gang reach those heights.
“I don’t do collabos often, but Coola Gang have the kind of situation I was looking for, that which has the potential to grow and I can tell that they are ready to go big,” an excited Bamboo reveals.
“We have younger fans on our side and we think by bringing Bamboo on board, he would also be able to capture that crowd too. On the other hand, this is a collabo to show that Bamboo is passing us the torch and that he believes in us taking this music industry to another level. Therefore this collabo is more of a give and take,” the Coola Gang duo says.
When asked if they were the one’s who asked Bamboo for the collabo, Coola Gang were very quick to clarify that it was actually the opposite.
“Maybe Jesus showed him in his dreams that we were the ideal guys to work with to bring more crowds to his side,” says Kapella.
The duo will have no problem if the song with Bamboo is hated on. After all, it is the controversy that they are after.
“If guys talk about our music, then we know we have made an impact, we want to be and remain the current affairs in this industry and thus a lot of creativity has to come from us”, the Coola Gang duo said.
